Keep, Rollin, Rollin, Rollin.. Tips to Organize Your Jiu Jitsu Training Schedule
As a grappler you know that consistency is key to improving your skills on the mat. But sometimes, life can get in the way, and we understand that it can be hard to find time to train. Let me share some practical tips to help you organize your schedule and make the most of your Jiu Jitsu training.
1. Set Training Goals:
Define your goals, whether it's to attend a certain number of classes per week, to work on a particular area of your grappling game or to prepare for a competition.
2. Create a Personal Training Schedule:
Plan out your training sessions, including mat time, drilling, and strength & conditioning.
3. Prioritize Mat Time:
Treat Jiu Jitsu class time as non-negotiable, just like going to school or work – show up regularly and be on time. We shouldn’t have to say it but don’t prioritise Jiu Jitsu class over important family time – but rethink that online gaming or going to the bar.. you can definitely get your session in before heading out.
4. Use a Training Log:
Track your progress, note what you've learned, and set goals of things to try in upcoming classes.
5. Prepare at home:
Meal preparation is a great way to have time through the week for more activities – prepare a couple of meals on the weekend and store them in the fridge or freezer ready for a quick reheat and eat.
6. Value Your Recovery:
Allow time for rest and recovery between training sessions – this doesn’t mean do nothing though active recovery sessions like a short walk or a mobility session will aid in blood flow and recovery – get good sleep at night, your body will thank you.
7. Make it a Habit:
Consistency breeds progress – show up regularly and make Jiu Jitsu a part of your routine. If you implement these suggestions consistency should be much easier and enjoyable.
8. Ask for Help When You Need It:
If you get stuck a good coach should be able to guide you and help you organize your training sessions in a very short time
By implementing these tips, you'll be able to organize your schedule and make the most of your Jiu Jitsu training. Remember the saying “if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail” every roll and every rep counts – get on the mat and keep rolling!
