Essential Items to Pack for Your Jiu Jitsu Class

As a grappler, you want to be prepared for a great training session. Packing the right gear can make all the difference in your performance and comfort on the mat. A few weeks ago we covered on what to expect on your first Jiu Jitsu class, maybe you have been on the mats for a little while now and made the commitment; so here’s some things that will help you prepare more for all of those grappling sessions ahead of you.

1. Comfortable Grappling Shorts or Pants:

Designed for mobility and flexibility, grappling shorts, tights or Gi pants are a must. Look for ones with a secure fit and breathable material.

2. Rash Guard or T-Shirt:

A moisture-wicking rash guard or t-shirt keeps you dry and comfortable during intense training.
Also notice that some rash guards are ranked, they denote a ranked colour of Blue, Purple, Brown or sometimes Black/Red. These rash guards are usually noticeable and marked in their description as RANKED. If you aren’t sure check with your instructor so they can help you buy the right colour, this is especially important if you are competing.

3. Belt (if applicable):
We aren’t a Gi school but we thought we would add this for anyone reading outside of our academy.
Much like what we said above about the rash guard, your belt signifies your rank in Jiu Jitsu.
If you have a belt and you train at a Gi school.. bring it! It's a symbol of your hard work and progress.

4. Water Bottle:
Stay hydrated before, during, and after class. A refillable water bottle is a must.

5. Mouthguard:
Protect your teeth and mouth with a high-quality mouthguard. Trust us, you don't want to risk injury!

6. Small Towel:
A small towel is handy for drying up sweat.

7. Flip Flops:
Use these when walking around off the matted area or in the showers.

8. Spare Change of Clothes:
Pack a spare set of clothes, Don’t leave the academy in your training gear even if you are going straight home.. all that sweat, use wet wipes if need be and change into dry gear.

9. Wet Gear Bag:
Somewhere to put all that sweaty stuff separate to your other gear, GET IT OUT AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME and wash it.. don’t leave it for a day sitting there that’s how your gear gets smelly with bacteria.. if need be soak it in water with a little anti-bacterial rinse if you can’t wash it that day.

10. Small First Aid Kit:
Your academy should have lots of first aid supplies but bring your own, things can include band aids, strapping tape, Panadol, anti-bac cream..

11. Hygiene Items:
Deodorant, Chewing Gum, Wet Wipes, Nail Clippers and a File.. All things you need to bring to stay fresh and clean, always remember to keep those nails short and filed, fresh cut nails are sharp, always file them down to avoid cuts.

By packing these essentials, you'll be ready to roll with confidence and comfort.
At 10th Planet Hobart we have cubby cubes that you can leave some of your gear in so it’s ready for your next training session.

Remember to check with your academy for specific requirements or recommendations.

Happy Rolling!
